WBO super middleweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez is looking for a second successful title defence on Friday night, which comes against undefeated American Jesse “Hard Work” Hart.Gilberto Ramirez (35-0, 24 KOs) meets his WBO mandatory challenger Jesse Hart (22-0, 18 KOs) in a bout between two unbeaten fighters in Tucson, Arizona.

When Vasyl Lomachenko vacated the WBO featherweight title, Top Rank got a chance to get Valdez into that mix, and managed to secure a vacant title fight against Matias Rueda. On paper, Rueda was and powerful, as the Argentine came in with a record of 26-0, 23 wins by knockout. But instead of meeting dangerous resistance, Valdez demolished Rueda inside of two rounds, and Rueda looked hopelessly overmatched.

Since becoming world champion in April last year after a convincing unanimous decision over the Arthur Abraham, Ramirez has made one defence against the unheralded Ukranian Max Bursak, in a fight that saw Bursak move up from his usual middleweight weight class. Ramirez retained his WBO title in his first fight in over a year in a ‘shutout’ display, with all three judges scorecards reading 120-106.

There’s a lot of reason to like Valdez. Even as an amateur, it was clear he was better suited to the pro ranks, and thus far he has not disappointed. He’s fun to watch, looks to win by knockout when he can, and has an agreeable personality. There’s still a level or two for him to explore before he’s an elite fighter, though.

Jesse Hart is coming off the back of two TKO wins over Andrew Hernandez and Alan Campa inside the months. Hart’s stock rose considerably in 2015 when he fought on the undercard of the Mayweather vs Pacquiao super-fight, and has since captured the USBA super middleweight championship.
